In his latest video, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accuses Western nations of deliberately prolonging the war in Ukraine to advance their own interests. He claims that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky benefits from sustained foreign aid, criticises U.S. President Joe Biden’s actions, and announces plans to attend the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Moscow, a decision that raises further questions about Slovakia’s foreign policy alignment.
The West “Desires War,” Fico Alleges
Fico claimed there is mounting evidence that Western powers are intentionally prolonging the war in Ukraine. He argued that this strategy benefits Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who continues to receive significant international aid. Without naming specific sources, Fico suggested a broader agenda behind Western involvement, casting NATO and EU strategies in a sceptical light. His remarks resonate with narratives that portray the conflict as a geopolitical game at Ukraine’s expense.
Fico’s critique extended to U.S. President Joe Biden, whose recent decisions he described as “insane” and “shocking.” According to Fico, Biden’s actions aim to block any chance of peace negotiations, instead escalating tensions in the region. He warned that growing missile attacks could lead to a “tragedy of unprecedented dimensions,” potentially igniting a conflict with far-reaching consequences. Such rhetoric not only questions NATO policies but also challenges Slovakia’s alignment with Western democratic alliances.
Fico’s Russia Visit: A Message to NATO
The Slovak Prime Minister announced his acceptance of an official invitation from the Russian Federation to attend the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2024. He framed this decision as a tribute to the victory over fascism, yet it comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over Slovakia’s position within NATO and the EU. While Fico downplayed political implications, this visit underscores his administration’s increasingly sceptical stance toward Western narratives on Ukraine and Russia.
By aligning himself with Russia at a time when the Kremlin seeks to exploit divisions within NATO, Fico will almost certainly help to amplify the Kremlin’s propaganda efforts. Such actions may embolden similar sceptical narratives in Central Europe, undermining solidarity against Russian aggression. His positioning appears to serve Moscow’s interests, potentially complicating Slovakia’s relationships with key allies.
