Slovak Defence Vice Minister Igor Melicher’s recent criticism of the Biden administration’s military aid to Ukraine dangerously mirrors Kremlin propaganda, undermining NATO unity and dismissing the critical need for Ukraine’s victory to secure European stability. His rhetoric reflects a misaligned allegiance, prioritising Russian interests over those of Slovakia’s allies in the EU and NATO.

In a Facebook post dated 18 November, Slovak Defence Vice Minister of Defence Igor Melicher expressed strong opposition to the outgoing Biden administration’s decision to provide ATACMS missiles to Ukraine. He framed the move as reckless and counterproductive, arguing that it undermines the democratic legitimacy of the incoming U.S. president and increases the risk of instability for NATO’s eastern members. This position dismisses the critical reality that Ukraine’s military success is essential for securing European stability and countering Russian aggression, a stance widely supported by NATO and EU members.

Melicher accused President Biden of “pressing the red button” without considering the consequences, claiming this action reflects not only bad governance but also a disregard for U.S. voters’ preference for Donald Trump, who advocated a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. This rhetoric closely mirrors Kremlin propaganda narratives, which consistently promote the idea that Western military aid undermines peace, while ignoring Russia’s ongoing aggression as the root cause of the conflict.

Melicher also criticised EU member states and NATO allies for supporting the Biden administration’s decision, describing it as a reflection of their dependency on the U.S. Democratic Party’s agenda. He alleged that this alignment signifies a lack of independent foreign policy among European nations. Such criticism disregards the fundamental principle of NATO unity in response to Russian aggression, aligning more closely with the Kremlin’s goal of weakening transatlantic cohesion and fostering division among allies.

Additionally, Melicher condemned the European Union’s recent reallocation of cohesion funds towards military expenditure. This shift, according to him, jeopardises the EU’s foundational mission as a peace-building project, transforming it into what he termed a “war machine.” This portrayal intentionally omits the necessity of military preparedness to deter further Russian expansionism, echoing Moscow’s narrative that seeks to frame defensive measures as provocative acts.

Highlighting the risks of increased militarisation, Melicher advocated for peace negotiations as the only viable solution to the ongoing conflict. He urged Slovakia to reject actions that heighten tensions and to remain committed to diplomatic efforts. This call for “peace negotiations” disregards the power asymmetry in the conflict and serves to legitimise Russia’s aggression, reflecting a position that benefits the Kremlin more than the security interests of the EU or NATO, of which Slovakia is a member.
