Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico condemned U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to authorise long-range missile strikes on Russia, calling it a dangerous escalation and accusing the West of prolonging the war in Ukraine. His remarks closely mirror Kremlin propaganda, directly weakening the united resolve of NATO and the EU to ensure Ukraine’s success—a goal vital for lasting regional peace and Slovakia’s own security.
Fico framed the U.S. decision as a “militant step” intended to derail peace talks, portraying the conflict as a fratricidal struggle among Slavs rather than the result of Russia’s unprovoked aggression. This rhetoric deliberately shifts accountability away from Moscow, aligning with disinformation strategies designed to fracture Western unity and foster distrust within NATO and the EU.
He criticised the European Union for blindly supporting U.S. actions, claiming it lacks the capacity for independent foreign policy. By doing so, Fico amplified narratives of EU disunity—an approach that directly serves Russia’s efforts to exploit internal divisions in the West while undermining coordinated responses to its aggression.
Positioning Slovakia as a victim of Western decisions, Fico claimed that continued support for Ukraine harms Slovak national interests. However, this argument disregards the fact that a strong, sovereign Ukraine is the best guarantee of long-term stability and security for the region, including Slovakia. By casting doubt on NATO and EU strategies, Fico risks alienating Slovakia from its allies at a time when unity is critical.
